Diamond CUT Vs. Diamond SHAPE

Diamond CUT Vs. Diamond SHAPE

Diamond Cut vs. Diamond Shape

Diamond Cut

A diamond's cut and a diamond's shape are often confused with each other. It is important to understanding the difference when purchasing a diamond. From our previous post, we touched on the 4 C's: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. Cut is the most important because this is how a diamond is valued.

A diamond's cut is the property that determines the brilliance and sparkle factor of the diamond.  A diamond's cut has the biggest effect on a diamond's beautyCut refers to the facets, symmetry, dimensions and reflective qualities of the diamond. When a diamond is poorly cut, light leaks out from the pavilion facets of the diamond which diminishes its brilliance and sparkle. In a well cut diamond, light that is drawn into the diamond will reflect and refract back into the viewer’s eyes as brilliance and fire. CUT is arguably the most important factor that affect a diamond’s appearance.

Below is a diagram that shows the different types of cut a diamond can be cut. The cuts are: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Ideal. You can see that there are less facets in a poorly cut diamond versus an ideal cut.

Diamond Shape

A diamond's shape refers to the form of the diamond while cut refers to how the diamond's proportions reflect light. Each shape has its own unique properties which affects how sparkly the diamond will appear.
